Miskeralytis - An Antidote

Tee hee. This happened about half an hour ago.

My mother had sent me out to get some milk from the local Mother Dairy shop. When I reached the place, there were two customers standing there already - two thirty-something men.

The first one was buying icecreams, two each of about three different varieties - for his kids, I assumed. The shopkeeper - a mallu - totalled up everything and the guy paid for it. Just as he was leaving, his phone rang. He picked it up and said, "Aa, Verghesey, enthokke ondu?"

The second guy asked for a couple of litres of toned milk. The shopkeeper asked if he wanted anything else. So the guy went to a red car parked nearby and asked the lady sitting inside, "Vere enthengilum veno? Ice creamo vallom?"

Why do I even bother missing Kerala?

we lived in siliguri (WB) in the late 1980's when my dad was posted there...and he used to tour the north east a lot on work. After one of his visits to Arunachal Pradesh..he told us about how there were two competing "Kerala Samajam"s (mostly Army and Air Force personnel and their families) in Itanagar. Quite amazing :D.

[While the stupid earthlings were watching movies about Martian invasions (War of the worlds?), the Mals were quietly but methodically preparing themselves...]

Almost 10% of Delhiites are malayalees. No wonder they are everywhere. I just rolled off into reminiscence. To my mind come the faces and personalities I came across whereever I went, situations so funny I still double over whenever I think of em, and determination and courage to make a living braving great odds that still makes me wonder. What readily comes to mind is this kid I came across a few years back in Mumbai, street smart and tough, from Thrissur, determined to make a living for himself and his family back in Kerala. Made me buy jodhpuri sandals I did not need nor want. Set me back a couple of hundred bucks lol. Very interesting sales pitch learnt on the streets. Could give any MBA a run for his money lol. The kid had spunk. I have always admired fighters and this kid was a true winner. I never regreted buying those sandals. Life is a great teacher and this kid was one hell of a student. Another guy who I came across with his traditional thattukada selling hot dosas, appam, idlis, paruppuvada, urunnuvada, even had tapioca chips lol near Dal lake in Srinagar. Good man, very good talker, invited me to the local malayalee samajam ayyappa pooja. I was fascinated by his life story and how he finally ended up here. This guy had lived a very hard life but he came out stronger. Some are broken by life but some just thrive no matter what hits them. Nobody looking at that smiling happy face would guess what this guy had lived through. It is wonderful to see how the will to endure so that they can take care of their family can make men overcome almost any obstacle in their path. This is especially true of malayalees.
